Spark is ready for printing all my articles has been approved by both of my Russian and English supervisors, no future assignments yet.
Hiking. I’ve been to my firs city hike last Sunday. We expected a nice sunny weather, so we were a little surprised to wake up in the morning and see that everything is covered in snow, which is still falling. I wasn’t sure we are still having this hike, since the weather conditions are obviously not the best ones for hiking, so I confirmed it with ms. Niedermann. Finally at 9, barely on time we all gathered at Bobur Park. Out of all places we could go to, we went down nearly exactly the same way I came, visiting all the places I kknew perfectly. We visited Bratskiye Mogili – World War Memorial, where me and Ms. Niedermann amde 2 snow angels.
Then we went down the Volgogradskaya street to Gafur Gulom Park, which is a place I really know the best. We’ve been walking and telling stories, looking at the snow, I’ve been pointing at everything I thought was interesting. Then we went down the Bunyodkor St., till th metro Hamza. There I realized that my leg I broke couple of years ago really bothers me, so I had to stop walking. But not completely – I was in 20 minutes from my house, so I continued walking alone. For some reason(maybe because of my leg) this hike was very tiring and I slept for most of the Sunday afterward. But it was fun.
MAD. We had another teaching session with them again – read some book and started an artistic assignment with them. Next lesson we are planning to split them in groups, withone leader that is good in this particular field and then ask some of them to write a story, some to draw it, and some to translate it.The problem is that the best childrean are best at everything, so it’s hard to decide who will be leading whom, so I guess we will have to rotate them, as well as move around ourselves. For some reason, despite the planning we’ve done I have a feeling it will be really chaotic. Let’s hope it will go smoothely.
Operations Group. I’m currently drafting an official letter to school after I got some advises from all the MAD supervisors. I’ve never felt that pressured before, because it not only needs to be diplomatic, but also very clear on what e expect. I have some more time to work on that and discuss it with Ms. Niedermann and then me and probably Ramin will go to the school at weekend. I need Ramin, because someone have to learn how to do it now, while I’m still here in order to be able to continue working next year. So I will be teaching him on the way.

I’ve already blogged about the recent MAD news so now it’s time to talk about my future journalism and editing plans.

I believe that the Russian Newspaper as it is will not be as popular as an addition to Spark. So we are joining these two now. It won’t be purely Russian, just some articles will be bilingual(or so it is for this issue)

Since we don’t have too much time, till the January issue is published, for now there will only be one(but big) article in Russian – Social Networks in Tashkent, were I’m going to talk about the most popular social networks, and maybe try to understand the reasons for their popularity.

I’ll be checking the Russian part and as usual Malika will be checking the English translation of it(or I would rather say an English version, as it will be more like a separate piece of writing – translations don’t work too well)

____

MAD is canceled for this week and Hiking plans haven’t’ been set yet.

During winter break I’ve been finally able to arrange the check-up with kids for the Operations Group. It was a little disorganized on the school’s part – they’ve lost the list of students they’ve given me, so it took us some time to figure that out. Finally I had the medical records of two children and the kids themselves – a boy and a girl, both of them really having trouble walking. It was painful too look at them for me, but I see that they don’t need any sympathy. They fell alright in this school, because there they are treated like any other person would’ve been. I’m just afraid that the outside word will be a bit of a shock for them at the time thy will have to graduate.

But I was talking about the check-up. So we somehow manged to get to the clinic and that’s when things got really complicated. Clinic is at the second floor. And it means a lot of stairs. 2 kids having troubles walking and one small me. I won’t talk about how we made it up the stairs, I don’t want to complain. After that things went quick. The doctor quickly look at their medical records and examined kids and after that we had quite a long talk about what to do next.

We discovered that both of these kids had operation at some point, girl – a year ago, boy – 6 years ago. The problem is is that it was all wasted and operations changed nothing, because there was no proper rehabilitation period. It’s too late to fix anything for the boy, but there is still something that can be done for the girl, but it has to be their school’s responsibility to keep an eye on it. We can only get the orthopedic footwear for this girl and maybe take a find of “guardianship” over her on a more of an official level. We can then meet with the girl from time to time and check how she’s doing and find out if she’s getting enough attention.

Now here’s our plan for the boy. He needs a tendon extension. This will put him to the hospital for around a month. After that he need to have a proper rehabilitation period, so the main condition for the operation to be done is that school will agree to take care of that – it will only require some additional physiotherapy and maybe massage. We can provide orthopedic footwear and maybe some additional financial help if it is required. But this is not going to be easy.

Now I’m working on an official letter to school arranging all that was mentioned above. I would have to then go and talk to people anyway, but we need the letter to emphasize the importance of what we are talking about.

As soon as their 2nd semester starts I will find some time to go to the orthopedic footwear shop and order shoes for the boy from last year and this new girl that had operation last year.

What I can say in conclusion is that I never expected this whole process to be that complicated. There is so many factor involved and it is such an enormous responsibility that it gets scary at times. But I see the right course of action and I know what to do next. By the way I opened the new page specifically for MAD (http://polinal.edublogs.org/make-a-difference/) and made an update for the MAD website (http://mad.site40.net/)
I’m planning to connect these two pages so people can get more detailed reports on what we are doing.

MAD Teaching is finished for this year at that point. We had our last session with kids yesterday, and we continued with our latest plan to give them a story to read and translate, to build a vocabulary and help them understand the different styles of writing. We also introduces some simple grammar on the last lesson.
So for the next year e can actually start doing our own book instead of reading someone else’ ones.
We’ve build a good vocabulary with them, and our group of children is really hard working and easy to community with them. They are open, diligent and patient in their studies.
We will spend the first week after we come back from the Winter break on detailed planning of the writing of the book. We also have some ideas for illustration, because apparently we have some really good drawers.
MAD operations Group will start to the fullest after the break starts. We arranged the meeting with the doctor for the first Monday of it – 20th of December, and hoping to do everything at that day – diagnosis, analysis, check-up. We would just need to confirm everything in the next few days.

Fitness is a new program now – P90X Workout. It’s really crazy. Tiring , because it is non-stop, but really good. It works on different levels of difficulty to let us “rest” from the previous hard stage of the exercise. We will be continuously working on the different part of the body.

I had to miss the first Hiking city walk, because I was too sick during weekend, but I hope to join some more walks after the break.

Russian Newspaper will meet today to discuss our progress and plans for future. We decided that this issue will be mostly music oriented – both urban rock and rap. Tony is writing an article for the STOP column about the reasons to stop wars; Nikita is interviewing one old musician who used to play in the rock band when he was younger; I’m doing the interview with one(or two if I’m lucky) rock bands, quite popular in Tashkent. Hopefully I’ll get Timur to work on something(and he promised he will).
I’m planning to make a January issue y the end of the month after we come back from the break.

This trimester will basically be continuing all the old activities I had in this trimester. For Veche it will be putting together the new issue, which will hopefully have works by some new members in it. And hopefully it will have the missing articles by Timur – we’ll see how my leadership skills have really improved. I’ve already started collecting some materials for the new issue – I want to do 2 big articles this time – one continuing the exploration of the urban culture I stated in the first issue – maybe meeting some underground rock bands – I have some connections in that area. And the second article I want to write will e an investigation of the Russian Orthodox Church history – what it takes a small church to survive in the heart of a Muslim region.
I think we are basically done with Spark for this quarter – I’ve already submitted my article for the last issue this year and we’ve got left is some organizational moments.
Fitness hopefully(if it won’t get closed) will be just continuing with my individual program, which I’m planning of changing a little to do something to improve my balance. Hiking will be city walks and I hope I’ll really enjoy it, because I’ll be discovering the city from the new perspective.
make a Difference is continuing with the lessons and books(we had to change our approach slightly and make it more reading oriented at that stage) and organizing the operation which is far more challenging than I imagined – it’s hard to find the common time for the children and surgeon to get them to the check-up.

1.What are you going to do to keep the balance, and find a way to increase your time in the next weeks.

I’ve already realized that I’m well behind the required number of hours for action at this moment, so apart from joining Fitness again this Trimester(hopefully it won’t get closed as enough people will sign up), I also joined the hiking Club and joined them on their last trip to the mountains this year. I’m quite confident that in sphere of creativity I’m ahead of graphic for hours because of all the work for MUN and Russian Newspaper in past couple of weeks. By the way Veche is now available on the website starting today.
As for service, I’m sure I can keep up with the hours as the real preparation for operations will start soon.

2. How do you feel about the quality of your reflections, and what is your comfort level with this possibility?

I’m perfectly fine with sharing these reflection with anyone who may be interested in reading them, besides I already have Ms. Niederamann as one of my readers, so it’s not a problem for me to open up.
My reflection may not always be perfect, but I’m sure it’s understandable.

“Everything gets canceled!” that’s basically the only thought that haunts for the last couple of weeks. I can’t do anything, there’s no balance in hour at all since the fall break week.
Make A Difference is canceled for 3 weeks in a row – twice because the children from this school had holiday, once because of Eid. It’s not only loosing the time with children, which will most probably mean that they have forgot what we’ve done so far; but it also means another delay of check-ups for the Operations Group. It’s really hard to arrange the time with the surgeon from the Jar clinic, but he really is an amazing specialist we can trust and he helped us a lot last year, so I don’t want to look for anyone else.
Now about a slightly more positive thing – Veche Newspaper is finalized and ready for printing. I decided to publish it without Timur;s articles, since it doesn’t look like he’s going to write one. I was sure that the newspaper will be published last Friday, but me and my supervisor had a little debate about the content of main article(about Cosmonauts), so i in the end she convinced me to change it slightly. And then Mr. Ross, who helps me with publishing it said that school printers are not the best choice for printing the newspaper and that printing would have to be done during weekend. But I hope that I’ll at least have the online version of it on the web-site by the end of this week. The only problem is that from now on everything that gets published on the website needs to be discussed with director. Since he can’t speak any Russian I’d have to go through the content of it with him before it can be uploaded to tashschool.
On my panic mode i decided to join the Senior Hiking Club. It’s not just the urgent need for action hours (because Fitness Training gets canceled all the time and is actually in risk of being canceled altogether, since there aren’t enough people who attend it systematically). That was just the last argument for joining the club for me – Mr. Getter and Ms. Niedermann were trying to convince me to join it since the end of last year, when we were at the Science Field Trip(I was hiking like crazy there =) )
Update for 16th of November: So I joined hikers now and we already had our first hike together. This one will probably be the last mountain hike in this season, after that it will be city walks, since it will start snowing in the mountains soon.
The hike was amazing. Nature was beautiful, company was great, some paths that we chose(when we actually had to split and the second half went down the safer way) were just crazily hard. I’m really happy I decided to join – I don’t remember the last time I hiked and had so much fun!

Make A Difference definitely makes us really think about what’s going on in the world: all this voluntary work in communication and collaboration with children with disabilities really makes you aware of the world problems, it makes us caring. Just seeing these children, some of which are not to much younger than we are, understanding that they are not too much different than any other person you know makes it even harder to accept the current state of world and current attitude toward people with disabilities.
Also, as we are currently a part of international community we know that in the rest of the world these people are treated differently, but in our country the condition of this problem is lamentable.

What I’m currently working on is trying to make their lives a little bit better. We are planning to do operation for children(8-10 year old) that can really improve their health and maybe even allow them to become a full member of the society, with no need for special care and creation of special conditions.

I also believe that showing them our care, our interest in their lives can help them understand that the world is not as cruel and indifferent, as it may seem. I hope this will help them develop a more optimistic worldview and look forward into future instead of fearing it.

In my Newspaper, Veche I also talk about some topical things – in the first issue the main article I’m investigating what is going on at the Cosmanauts Metro for ages already and looking at it as something bigger then just gathering of teenagers obsessed with extreme sports. I’m trying to argue that this is actually at that level of cultural phenomena of modern life.

In the next issue I’m planning to introduce the column “STOP!” where we will be publishing some things that we believe have to be put to an end.it will range from small things to issues of global importance, however I as an editor would have to be cautious of what I’m allowing to appear there and make sure it’s not that sensitive.

Past 2 weeks of CAS that followed after the Fall break weren’t the most busy ones.
Of course the big part of it was the Model United Nations. This two days of debates were the result of a long hours of preparation and research on the topic of our committees and the background of the country we’ve been assigned, and the countries viewpoint, allies etc. And don’t forget the time for writing the formal resolution and trying to convince people that are supposed to support this resolution that they really have to support it. It wasn’t that easy. The general tendency is that during MUN people either don’t care at all about what’s going on, or expressing not the country’s opinion, but their own opinion.
The first day of debates was good, if we forget about the problem mentioned above. Ironically, I managed to persuade some countries to support my resolution(although they would’ve probably abstain it), but the countries that in real life would’ve supported it, didn’t. Maybe it was the lack of interest in what’s going on, or just they were tired of the discussions already by the end of the day. IN any case, my resolution didn’t pass.
That’s the second year I participate in MUN and I clearly understand what my problem is. I’m not a really good speaker. I make much more sense when I’m speaking compares to some other people, because I weight every word before saying it. But what I lack is the skill of appearing confident while talking complete nonsense(that some other people are really good at…) The other problem that I couldn’t do anything with, is the fact that at some point after a really stupid speech, that makes no sense at all I sometimes just don’t reply at all, because if I did reply I would’ve critiqued every single word that person have said. And no one counters people who are obviously making up facts. Maybe because they don’t notice, or don’t care, or like in my case their shyness and not being able to stand the complete irrelevance of the speech doesn’t allow them to speak against some points a person makes.
The hard thing about MUN is that don’t always have a chance to speak – a lot depends on the chairs. And you can’t directly correct someone or say that he’s not right – you have to do it in form of question. A relevant question, preferably. The other problem is that this person may just choose not to reply. Or not understand you, and the point you’re making will be lost.

Now going back in time to the Fall Break, I’d like to reflect on the progress with first issue of Russian Newspaper. The issues is basically ready – design is complete(fonts, color schemes, format, layout, orientation, pictures etc); the headline article is done. The only thing that’s missing is Timur’s articles. Although they were due the Wednesday of Fall Break, I still don”t have them. Maybe I’m not really good at enforcing the tasks on people. But I just don’t know what else I can do. I tried to be soft and ask him in a good way, tried to be more strict, in the end I even tried shouting at him. Maybe this will work. The last due date I set for him is this weekend. If I’m not getting this articles on Sunday, we are just publishing the issue without them and start working on the new one.
Hopefully with the start of new Activities Trimester some more people will join the newspaper. It will be harder in terms of managing this group, but easier in terms of diversification of material presented in the newspaper.

In Make a Difference we had one more lesson with kids and a planning session, since it’s the fall break in local schools now. The lesson went well – we continued introducing our students to some more stories, vocabulary and grammar constructions, and asked them to write a short-store about their daily activities in class. They shared the beginning with us, so we can correct some mistakes and their homework was to finish the story.
We now have access to a really good collection of stories, divided by levels of difficulty – “A-Z reader” – and during our planning session me and Shakhruh decided on the appropriate level of difficulty foe our class and picked the story to do with them. We also started putting the lesson together – organizing the material to present to students, picking the exercises etc. We’re finishing this at home, and we’ll be ready to meet students whenever they are coming, because it seems like our session after their break is canceled due to Eid.

Spark article was a really challenging one – I was supposed to write about the dress code selectivity, but instead I turned into a small sarcastic story, really going against my usual writing style. It was difficult but now, when I look at it I really feel proud of myself, especially after seeing that it’s nor just funny to me, other people seem to like it so far.
The only problem I had with this article, that made me rwerite a part of it, was that it appeared to the reader that it appeared to be aimed at someone in particular while in fact it wasn’t. But I’ve corrected it.

This is the activity I spend the most time planning for. I’m leading it and I’m responsible for everything that will be going on there.

I spent the most time planning the first meting, which happened at 5th of October. I was surprised that it worked out nearly perfectly on time. Despite some distractions during the meeting, by the time it was finished we have discussed and decided on everything I’ve planned to discuss – format, layout, columns, ideas for topics for this particular issue, some of the ideas I had for the design and the little organizational questions about the due dates for them to tell me the topic, and then to actually write everything down and send it to me to edit(wait until I edited it, and possibly rewrite some of the parts – who knows)

The due dates for articles to be sent to me is Wednesday, the 20th of October during the break, but we still have to decide on the title page and headline article, so before the issue is out we will have at least one more meeting.

Until that time I will be writing my article about the Culture of Cosmonauts with Tony and editing the other journalists works.

Fitness training

Fitness in fact requires a lot more planning and leadership than I expected. During first couple of sessions we just followed what Mr. Andrey was telling us to do. But after that he gradually made us take a higher part in leading this activity.

Last two sessions I had a part of time, when it was me leading the whole group. First time it was quite unexpectedly, so I had to think on the fly and there wasn’t too much planning involved. Here is the process of negotiations with my supervisors about whether it is fair to ask me to lead an activity without any planning beforehand =)

And here is the picture of me actually leading the Fitness Training – doing a complex of exercises on Balance.

The next training had to be the first one, when we were supposed to start our individual program – we had to come up with our own complexes of exercises with the full description. But not everyone have done it – so me and Huda have been leading the lesson for part of the lesson

Make a Difference
requires a lot of planning for the lessons – I’m trying to write everything with the approximate time I’ll need for that. Last lesson went quite well, and the time was allocated efficiently, we had 10 minutes to do some extra things and some activities that I had planned just in case.
We will be working on the plan for the next lesson over the break.
